We provide coverage of the PT LOUD music scene with a thing we call...... The Noise from the Boyz.
December 25th, 2007 And now... The 2007 SHEDDIES!
2007 out…2008 in. The end of the decade is near. Always a good sign for music, and time for another “Sheddies”, our look at some of the stuff that mattered round’here. We have included the winners from year’s past as well. Perspective is a good thing :)
- Best after show food. – “After show” has kind of taken on a new look on the Peninsula with more bands
that played all ages shows in the various halls or the still-missed Upside being replaced with shows in the clubs. This means that sustanance can actually be achieved AT the venue. Yep, no more stale peanuts from the Legion bar because they were too lazy to make food or a late night trip to Safeway to see what 8 foot sub was left after waterfront closes…this years winner goes to an actual place that makes food, The Water Street Brewing Company. The hang out we all know as the place Richard Gere kicked some ass in front of has expanded its menu with old school dude Jesse Rose and his creative food. A mix of northwest faves and basic tummy-warmers. An honorable mention for munchies during/after a show goes to Sirens, but we have heard a few reports that the drinks are so good that it really doesn’t matter what the food tastes like. kind of like a White Castle at 2AM. 2006 Winner was - Safeway takes the cake (2 foot sub) for the 2nd year in a row…but with a twist. It has become common knowledge that bands who lived here and moved away hit the Chinese at the Safeway because “no other Safeway Chinese tastes like the one in PT”. We are investigating the different elements into why this might be so, and will let you know what the DNA test says when the lab results get back. – 2005 winner - Best after show food. - Well...for one show, it was the Underdog hot dog cart. But the bastards got us hooked and then bailed because of a broken wheel. This would make our choice the “show-sub” as we call it. You know. One of those 3 foot 2 inch subs from Safeway that have been sitting in the case all day for $3.99. If you want um, you gotta get there before 2AM.
- Best Death-defying feat/trick – The new breed of bands haven’t really taken to any real shenanigans that we have heard of, so this years award goes to Love Doll Swingers/local soundman Walter. He has hooked up the community with a 200 volt box for the Legion Hall so that the power won’t go out again. Those of you who know, know that messing with the Legions power IS a Death-defying trick. The 2006 Winner was... - Last year’s winners were filled with bass players somersaulting off of high stages, exploding gear, and singers leaping off the overhang at the back of the Legion stage. This year’s winner is KitsapBands.com for their most excellent April Fools trick saying the they had sold their site to The bible-thumping church that owns Bremerton’s Roxy Theater, and taking the scam to levels of new trickery. They had a good 100 local fans wanting to donate money, server space, and time to stop the evil-good bastards. One of the funniest things I ever saw on line. 2005 Winner, Best Death-defying antic/trick. 3rd place, The Trophy Wives singer jumping from the stage overhang about 12 feet to the stage. Len from COF used to pull that one. 2nd Place, The Common Hero bassist Kyle, so disappointed with the turnout at a summer show that he decided to summer sault dive like there was a crowd...but there was not. 1st place. Alan, from The Last Goodbye for bowling himself into his wife/bassist 40 year old tube amp and wreaking yet another perfectly good guitar, while causing injury to himself in a way reminiscent of the OK Hotel in 92. Well done bro.
Best PT show - It was a sad year for all ages shows, at least big ones, so our choice is The Blakes/CI show at Sirens where they spread the word for young people to “stand in the hall and catch the bands”. More shows have followed that are all ages friendly, and we think it’s rad that the club has shows featuring rock bands that wouldn’t have a place to play in town otherwise. About as “rock” of a roster as that venue has ever had. Honorable mentions go to The Upstage for the ballsy move of just bringing blues god Johnny Winter to town, and the Hells Belles Benefit (Click for some VERY cool video from Jim) at McCurdy, Pavilion. The 2006 Winner was - The Skatepark Grand Opening - The Nihilists, Captain Incognito, Patterns, Lucius Clay, The Inkreats, Gypsy Joy Ride, Hula-hooping dude and others. One of the only times I have seen the city, the kids, concerned adults and just about every kind of band in town from funk to punk play in a show that was entertaining, sounded good and made sense. 2005 Best show - Hands down, it was the Brett Pemberton promoted Chinatown, Aiden, Nihilist, Schoolyard Heroes, HollwPoints in January. Be a long time before a top to bottom show that good will be here again.
- Best Out of Town Band - Its always cool when a new band is brought to town and they and the town just kind of “gel” This years winner, The Rock and Roll Soldiers from Eugune, OR, have garnered a secure fan base of people who diden’t know who they were a year ago. A great band that has given PT it’s time, and played some great shows here in the last year. The 2006 Winner was - For the 2nd year in a row, it has to be DEK, and for all the same reasons they won in 05. Our runner up winner is The Blakes. Looks like the hippies in the over 21 clubs finally found a rock band that they love. The Blakes have found themselves playing the regular circuit of clubs on the peninsula, and we have never heard of ANYONE that doesn’t love them. 2005 Winner - Best Out of Town Band - My vote is for DEK not just for what they did onstage, but off. Many don’t know this, but they are responsible for bringing The Briggs, Angel City Outcasts, Phnomonauts, and others to town, when none of these bands would have come to our dusty hamlet without their help.
Person of the Year – This years winner, Matias Booth, pretty much was responsible for most of the indie rock shows that happened in 2007. He also produced a free show, spending hundreds out of his own pocket to make it happen, supported bands at their other shows, and really.. just loves music. Got that...Spend own money, support other peoples stuff, love music. Sounds like a plan. The 2006 Winner was - Steve and Quimper Sound. I remember when the Goodwill opened in PT. Even before it opened, 3 other thrift stores either closed, or reduced their hours. Same thing when Hollywood video opened. Before it even let a customer in the door, 2 video stores just gave up at the sight of a store with promo that didn’t look like a 4 year old did it. In the face of major chains like Tower closing, and indie stores dropping like flies around the country, it would have been easy for Quimper Sound to just shut it’s doors and claim defeat as so many spineless ones do to the evils of another store moving into the area or in the case of the record industry, it’s whole way of life changing from records/cds to downloads , but not this one. Steve expanded his store to a cool new location adding a kiddie mosh pit, a wider selection, provides a small stage in store for local acoustic and DJ artists, and has sold 1000’s of concert tickets for local promoters and charities for free. That just touches the surface of how Steve has tried to make Quimper Sound one of the few “record sores” that will survive the internet age, and do it with soul and passion. Person of the year part 2 – Matt, The Upside. In the first 4 months of 2006 before they closed, PA all ages rock club The Upside held more hard rock shows then PT held in the last 5 years. They went just “rock shows”, but presented bands that would have never come anywhere near here, and provided a generation of fans with memories that will last forever, in a venue that had “the vibe”. Matt and the others that “worked” The Upside showed us all how hard it is to run a venue, and how cool it can be when you pull it off, and how sad it can be when it ends. We will always miss The Upside. Person of the Year, 2005 Promoter/Libido frontman Dan Demay. The last 7 months of shows would not have happened without him Zero, Skyler, Dakotah and a host of others. DJ Style E. has been to every show with his lights and help, even though rock isn’t his main gig, he supports, and is INVOLVED.
Shedboard topic of the year. - The rise of the Hip-Hop nation is the winner. OK, while maybe not a “nation” around here, rap, hip hop, and dance music in general have had a good year locally with former residents Knothead and Rubio clicking off appearances, and locals Zip Locc releasing a CD, a few have taken to the board to spread the word, and are the ones this year that have tried their best to use the board for what we built it for. Honorable mention goes to former Hollwpoint/WFTS’s Brett Pemberton. Whether from Japan or NYC, Brett always checks in and brings up great topics about him, his music, and his travels. The 2006 Winner was - Once again, The Warrior is the winner with his モState of the Warrior Nation TMヤ address. Once you see it, regular YouTube can’t compare. 2005 Winner, Shedboard topic of the year. - Dirty Whore, No Talent. Unexplainable.
- Fan of the year – It would have to go to Matias Booth as well. For all the reasons above PLUS, did we mention he really likes music? The 2006 Winner was - The Parents. You must “Sing” this one to the melody of Foreigners, “Women”… Women in fast cars, women who own bars, women with spare living rooms, women who make the crowds swoon… None of the big shows that happened in 06, would have without the parents (yep. The guys too). Every fan of local music would be up shit creek without them. Fan of the year, runner up – The 2006 Winner was - Mike “The Dad” from DEK. He doesn’t even live here, but “the dad” from DEK is not only a fan of the music, but has worked his but off to bring small towns all over the Northwest “The Rock”. History will show just how special it is to have not only bands like DEK willing to play here, but also will go to bat to bring along bands like The Briefs and The Accused to a town that would have never seen a bands like them otherwise. Fan of the year, 2nd runner up – Kelsey. How else can you explain someone who can be seen tolerating/enjoying the 4 chord rock playlist of Lit’s Friday night radio show from the studio AND the simplistic drones of what is usually played at the BR while making coffee. All kidding aside…she goes to shows, supports EVERYONE as a fan, and donates a ton of time to people doing good things like the BR. Most of all, she loves music, all music, and is just one of the coolest fans we know of. Another one of “those people would be Myles, who gets our nod as a cool fan as well. 2005 winners. Fan of the Year - Its a tie. Althya. Gotta love someone who comes to all the shows, gives rides, brings more girls, and is genuinely bummed when she does miss a show. The other is Matias. Not only does he truly love the music, but helps out at almost every show working with Zero and the Lights. Steven Tyler from Areosmith once said that without fans like them, rock shows wouldn’t be any fun. We agree.
Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - Last year’s winner with a new name, New Faces did everything they should in 07 including some great out of town shows, getting some recording done, and refining a sound that makes you bob yo head at the very least, and imbed their hooks in your brain the morning after a show on most nights. They have a gaggle of Seattle dates coming up at the Comet, Funhouse, and that true test of if you actually care if people like you or not, the EMP Battle of the bands. Other than making old people everywhere go “Isen’t that Rod Stewart’s band”, a great year for a band that has a chance to make a ducut and some sense in this bidness. The 2006 Winner was - A tie between The Inkreats and Captain Incognito - Both have catchy songs that keep getting better, entertaining performances and a fan base that loves them, all at an age where I was still trying to jump the fence at Frampton concerts. 2005 winner Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - Shotgun Kisses. They may play a lot of covers, but there are a lot of bands that make $1000 a night playing covers, so don’t laugh. Besides...they rock at it.
Most Improved Band - S.O.S. takes the nod this year. You can see the influence of bands that grow up in the same group or play the same shows together, and locally there is no better example than the “Hollowpoints-Nihilists-Inkreats” progression that we have all beared witness to over the years. This has not stopped this very young band from finding a voice that is their own, while still reminding you of the pedigree they have. Roaring guitars and in your face vocals are serving a songwriting style that is part Cramps, and part Robert Gordon. Please keep playing music. I beg of you. The 2006 Winner was - Captain Incognito. Barely a band a year ago, they managed to get some homemade recording done, write more songs, and play a few Seattle-type dates. 2005 Most Improved Band - The Inkreats. These guys will get scary-good in 06.
- Band we wish would have stayed together - Much as we would have liked to see what The Inkreats performances would have been like by now, this years winner goes to Buffalo Voice. Being that they were neighbors, when they practiced, they kept the crows off my roof, and my dog at the other end of the house. Nice job boys! A sheddie closes your too short PT stay. The 2006 Winner was - Patterns. Oh how we need more female rockers. A good band getting better before they hung it up. 2005 Winner - Band we wish would have stayed together - Lunatic Fringe.
Local Band of the Year – No band on the Peninsula has done more this year than the Lonely H. With a full tour of the US in 07, and one in early 08 that includes legendary venues like Austin’s Stubbs and Jersey’s Stone Pony, this band has done lots of cool stuff this year. Spin online band of the day, releasing a new CD, being on MSNBC, and building a national fan base. All these things and more make us dare you to google their band name. The 2006 Winner was - Dead Whore River. In a see of “punk” and blues-based rock comes the almighty DWR. If I had one Peninsula band to play for my life, scare Bin laden out of a hole, or make a crowd go Ooooo!, it would be this one. Technically a great metal band, and they stepped up their live schedule to include El Corazon and Studio 7 shows that cemented the fact that this IS the best live band that lives on the Peninsula. Local Band of the Year part 2 - The 2006 Winner was - The Lonely H. Baring calling the Hollowpoints, who we really haven’t lived here in 3 years and are in the “hall of fame” anyhow, no other band has done more in 06 than the H. Mind you, they have had some great people helping in their corner, but the songs are great, they played shows ranging from creative local gigs and benefits (The Fair? at 19?) to big-time venues in Seattle like Neumo’s. All this while gaining great press, and the respect of a vast audience. These guys will be huge. May or may not be with this band, but the future is indeed bright. 2005 winner - Local Band of the Year - The Nihilist. They have improved every show, and now put on one of the best around and recorded a great debut CD. To top it off, like those that have come before them, they have helped promote shows and encourage new bands.
- Local MySpace site of the year - Knothead gets the sheddie this year. Don’t know of another artist with local ties that has used the thing better to get and promote gigs and find opportunities for him to play music outside of his base in Spokane. The 2006 Winner was - Brand X Formerly Anti Barney Superstar. With all this technology, you think someone would do something USEFUL with it all. In any case, Brand X has tried his best with his pt_local_music group to give the local rock loving mass regular updates, and a local forum other than this. Plenty of entertaining stuff comes in 2nd, but a MySpace site of the year? I am frankly amazed it made it to year 2 without the man messing it up. 2005 Winner, Local MySpace Site of the Year - Missionary Mercenary and PT Local Music
The Local Hard Music Supporter Award. – Promoter/fan Matias wins again. We vasalate between his brilliance and the fact that he is the only one that really is promoting shows outside of the clubs, so he kind of wins this one by default. Honorable mention goes to Nancy and Sirens who have mixed up their roster to include more rock shows at the venue and supporting her guys in New Faces. The 2006 Winner was - The Boiler Room. While we make no bones that we really support larger shows, on real stages, with real sound and lights, and real big crowds, those bands have to start somewhere. No other person or venue has featured more rock shows in PT than the Boiler Room. From a sparsely attended Stalin’s War show that deserved more of us to show up at, to a steady stream of the artists that have played the venue for years like the Solvents, The Boiler Room stepped up it’s efforts in 06 to bring a wider swath of music to the small room, and featured several bands from around the world, as well as more music/art/skate related events than I can ever remember. The Local Hard Music Supporter Award, Runner up - The 2006 Winner was - The one thing that always makes me happy is seeing great pictures and video from the local bands/shows. People like Jim, Kyle, Carson, Daryl and others give us an insight into the shows that you just can’t get any other way. Artists, photographers, and writers who document local music will always be important to many, and while there is nothing like being there, we salute the art that surrounds the music.
- Coolest Addition to the local music scene. The resugence of the Clubs. Clubs in PT, Sequim, Port Angeles, all have had an upswing in bands that rock. Venue that in prior incarnations were anything but rock have booked a year worth of shows that would not have played the area in years past. The boyz from Minor Imperfection clicking of duel shows with DEK was an addition that was not here a year ago, and 2 of the only big all ages shows in PA this year. The 2006 Winner was - Skate Park – Skate and rock go hand in hand, and the park has provided a great opportunity for local kids to get together, skate, and talk about music. We hope that the facility is “used” and that the city sees the correlation between “skate and music”, and fosters that into producing some summer shows at the venue. We will see, but the Skatepark already has been the best addition to the local youth environment in years in Port Townsend. Coolest Addition to the local music scene, runner up. – The 2006 Winner was - Radio. All respect to Dick Rossetti, (the End DJ who recently lost his job), but there can’t be anything funnier than REAL drunks who play guitar getting together to talk misguided politics and play local music. Throw in a revolving series of local freaks and Nurse Angie to keep all of Dan’s twisted chemistry experiments in line, and how can you not listen on Friday nights to the only local waves that matter (or that we have). There are other shows on these indie waves, but are pretty much what you would expect from a station in PT. A lot of dribble about environmentally sustainable something-or-other. Pretty much like that Saturday Night Live skit where they mock how silly public radio can be. Dan’s show however can only be considered a throwback to a simpler time when the absence of log books and rules meant real radio with no other agenda other than a party. More indie media please and where the hell is short-lived rag Blue Dog Black?
- Words that need to go away. This has always and always will win this topic… Rock and Punk. Till then, we will be here. Honorable mentions for words that need to go away include: Guitar Hero, Green, Rap, Rocktober, social networking, radio, A&R, label, Swag, Emo, Indie and Rad. Funk can stay as long as Prince is still alive and Tower of Power and George Clinton still tour.
Have a great 08!
October 20th, 2007 - With the exception of Zip Locc staying busy with the release of his CD “Product to Profit”, some stellar gigging from the former Captain Incognito, now freshly named New Faces, and the summer band Buffalo Voice clicking off a show or two, we bid ado to a sucky summer on the local rock scene. Falls our favorite time of year, and bidness has picked up on the local watch, so hear goes. New Name...Same good game... The above mentioned New Faces didn’t waste the summer. They Produced a cool little video that plays as our favorite local “concept” vid ever, a series of shows at credible Seattle venues like The Comet, songs that just keep getting better, especially the arrangements, and recording with Brian Brown, a Boston producer who worked at Q Division and Fort Apache, (two studios I have spun knobs at), and worked with a bunch of cool talent including the most underrated jam band ever, The Addison Groove Project. All in all, a solid period of work for this band who is way ahead of the curve for as young as they are, and are swimming the same waters that The Blakeshave had great success with. We suggest you see um at the Legion Hall, or for that matter, anywhere, as they are making the rounds all over Western Washington Den Mother Props... Water Street club Sirens has been booking a semi-steady diet of indie rock bands since The Blakes started making the rotation about 2 years ago. The vibe has extended to all ages on certain nights. Following a roady week show with Brett Pemberton and others that allowed under 21 to hang in the hall, the venue is continuing to encourage the kids to come on down, with November 2nd for The Greatest Hits being a good chance. To top it off, they helped do PT Radio when the word “radio” didn’t sound about as old as Windows 3.1
. Hip-hop to the hippady-hop... There is more Dance, Rap and R&B than I have ever seen festering in the area. We are craving more from Polished Opinion, Rubio is making waves in Seattle, Style E continues to play the area, and the above mentioned Zip Locc is working on several projects and collaboration’s recently. The most anticipated show for those in need of something in this genre has to be the Oct 26th show at the Boiler Room with Spokane/Hadlock’s Knothead, M-Dub, Killa V, and the return of AK-47 featuring the Heavy Metal Warrior. We bow to thee... Hard enough to do a real show in this town, let alone a free one, bu t we all have Matias to thank to for a great Legion show on the 26th starting at 9PM after the homecoming game with The Rock n Roll Soldiers , New Faces and a new band, SOS making their first trip into the Hall. The M-man is also working on a deal to bring another show to town that will bring a Seattle favorite to town. More when he says it is so. New Faces abound.... Not those new faces. Damm. The other new faces, and plenty of them are poping up on the radar. An Identity Crisis, SOS (Souls to Save), and Dash and Chauncey’s eclectric are just 3 examples of local cool stuff that is stirring. Check them out. Old Faces kick ass.... Well I don’t know how much more rad you can get than The Hollowpoints in Germany during OctoberFest, but that is where they are. After winding their way across the country to Boston. The band has spent the last month in Europe, and will be releasing a new CD in 08. some other old friends, Down We Go, have been killing audiences on their US tour. The band features Richard and Jesse from PT Band Nihilists. Former residents Chris Gunn and The Low Ones are doing fine in Tucson playing a lot of shows, and local favs Lucius Clay will be playing the 27th in their yearly Halloween bash at the Water Street Brewing Co.Around the Edges... Port Angeles saw Minor Imperfection and DEK host the Schoolyard Heroestonight (the 20th) at the Masonic. By far the most entertaining thing in the Kitsap world seems to be whenthe Warrior hits townfor Bowling night, but we do think you should check out the always entertaining Kitsap Bands.com for a host of great gig listings and whinny message board posts. Speaking of whinny posts, don’t forget to check out our little board. It’s the biggest message board on the Olympic Peninsula and filled with frustration and angst. Till next time. Be good, but call it like you see it.
December 17th, 2006 - So I can’t go to the Living End show at the Croc (pisses me off) and it looks like there is enough life in the scene for our 2nd annual “Sheddie” awards. 2006’s winners for the best in the area coming right up, but first...the news. If no one will adjust the poster, I guess we will... That’s right, DWR is NOT playing the 30th show at the Legion Hall in what promises to be an otherwise stellar way to end 06 and bring in the new year. The Heretix are a PA band that hasn’t played PT yet, and Innuendo is just off a date at Seattle’s Chop Suey while attending the U-dub. Goin South... Looks like The Nihilists will be playing a San Francisco date with the HollowPoints in January, with Portand, LA and Vegas dates in the works. More local shows please?... Other than the 30th, their is a show being planned in March at the Legion Hall, possibly a January show, and PA is looking like it is hosting more shows of late, with a pair of benefits and Andy’s (Minor Imperfection) Schoolyard Heroes show which drew a solid 300. Forces are at work to bring more noise to PT, and summer is just around the corner (OK..up the street)
And now... The 2006 SHEDDIES!
we have included the winners from last year as well. Perspective is a good thing :)
- Best after show food. – Safeway takes the cake (2 foot sub) for the 2nd year in a row…but with a twist. We agree.
- Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - A tie between The Inkreats and Captain Incognito - Both have catchy songs that keep getting better, entertaining performances and a fan base that loves them, all at an age where I was still trying to jump the fence at Frampton concerts. 2005 winner Band most likely to actually make money playing music for a living - Shotgun Kisses. They may play a lot of covers, but there are a lot of bands that make $1000 a night playing covers, so don’t laugh. Besides...they rock at it.
- Most Improved Band - Captain Incognito. Barely a band a year ago, they managed to get some homemade recording done, write more songs, and play a few Seattle-type dates. 2005 Most Improved Band - The Inkreats. These guys will get scary-good in 06.
- Band we wish would have stayed together - Patterns. Oh how we need more female rockers. A good band getting better before they hung it up. 2005 Winner - Band we wish would have stayed together - Lunatic Fringe.
- Local Band of the Year – Dead Whore River. Local Band of the Year part 2 - The Lonely H.
- Local MySpace site of the year - Brand X Formerly Anti Barney Superstar.
- The Local Hard Music Supporter Award. – The Boiler Room.
- The Local Hard Music Supporter Award, Runner up - The one thing that always makes me happy is seeing great pictures and video from the local bands/shows.
Skate Park – Skate and rock go hand in hand, and the park has provided a great opportunity for local kids to get together, skate, and talk about music. We hope that the facility is “used” and that the city sees the correlation between “skate and music”, and fosters that into producing some summer shows at the venue. We will see, but the Skatepark already has been the best addition to the local youth environment in years in Port Townsend.
- Coolest Addition to the local music scene, runner up. – Radio. All respect to Dick Rossetti, (the End DJ who recently lost his job), but there can’t be anything funnier than REAL drunks who play guitar getting together to talk
misguided politics and play local music.
Rock and Punk. Till then, we will be here. HALL OF FAME WINNER!
August 1st, 2006. Spelling errors and confusing grammar are always free. Mid-summer always seems to bring a lull in the action, well the lull is about to get shattered in a big way with new shows, and the approaching back to school show that is bound to please. But first, as always...the news. The band we want to hear... We have always said that a lot of local musicians, while kick ass now, are REALLY going to be interesting when they are in their 20’s, then many of them are now at 17. Enter a crop of PT veterans that are getting together in an informal way that, if it turns into a gigging band, will turn heads right away. Jesse, Parker and Ben from The Nihilist, Chris Z former of Lunatic Fringe, along with Neil, a former member of the Sadie Hawkins Rejects are planing on cranking out what has been described as “kind-of phsyobilly”. No doubt Jesse will be playing his new 6 foot white (at least for now) upright. If it happens, this band will destroy. Holla Hoddar... The aforementioned unnamed bands first chance to play in PT might be a return after 3 years of a revamped Kane Hoddar in a November date at the Hall. The Kane just returned from a trip to Japan and is sharing the stage with The Hollowpoints at Bumbershoot in September. Road Trip!....Speaking of The Nihilists, hopefully you caught what was probably an excellent road trip show on Sunday at the Seattle Drum School with The Inkreats, Delusional Label, and PT’s Capital Incognito. Another good one? catch a double bill of The HollowPoints and The Nihilists Aug 12th in Marysville. You can see um too... The Hollowpoints have a cool video posted at www.youtube.com and are playing some dates in Cali before the 26th show. After that, they giddy back out there on the road, as it seems there are a lot of new points fans and radio stations around the country that are just now discovering the band, so recording a new CD has been delayed for now. We might get the first tastes of some new stuff on the 26th. Thou shalt create more shows when the sun goes down earlier... A cool September show has been announced at the Hall on the 23rd with DEK, The Mechanical Dolls and Ryder Strong, with another band to be added. A little cool fact about that show is that the Dolls have acquired the services of former Common Hero bassist and winner of our 2005 Sheddie for best stage dive, Kyle. A cool 21+ show coming right up features Portland’s very cool Young Immortals are playing Sirens on the 19th of August at 10pm. We also here that several people are getting it together to provide what would be the 6th annual Halloween shows with some cool bands being lined up. The Legion Hall Lawn will not get rain on September 2nd, but if it does, you should head on down anyhow for an outdoor show with Captain Incognito and wave band The Jetsons B-Ham. Frankly my dear, I don’t give a Dan... Seems like now that the Drive Inn is open, they have gotten a little hipper and started playing some local rock, or it just might be that thing called the Evening load on 89.7 that has featured a ton of local noise and guests including the Warrior and Len Enders, along with new intern A-dog/Nurse Ang (who is looking for a better name), and in her ever formidable way is keeping those boys in line with their dribble. 2 beer cans up around here. Check it out. Speaking of AngieeeeeeIwantmyBinkie!.... Congratulations to Angie Hart (who helps with some of the Legion shows working the door) and Kipp Miller who had a healthy baby boy, Aidenn. Yes he is named after the band, showing that the little scene around here and the bands that play it can even inspire people not in their teens. You can meet him on the 26th. Less than a month old and his first show will be a Briefs one so you know he will be a badass, and is the future administrator of this web site weather he knows it or not. Nice Arrangement. They get rock, We get to rock... Kudos to Jennifer Taylor and The Inkreats who are working on getting together a cleaning/improvment crew for the Legion Hall. The management of the Hall has been very open to the idea of more rock/punk shows at the venue, as witnessed by the full slate of at least once a month shows through the end of the year. Rewind back to this time last year and you will find that the 05 school year brought us a scant sprinkling of shows while the hall underwent a management change from another planet, and the Boiler Room didn’t really host, let alone pursue hard music shows at the newly opened location. Fast forward to now and we can see that the 06-07 season looks to be the best ever with the energy of new bands, new promoters, a new manager at the hall (his name is John. Thank him when you see him), and blood at the BR that brought in some great events for summer which is usually pretty slow when it comes to shows. Our thanks once more go to Be-B (Zero, Becky and a host of others) for helping to make better BR shows go down, and we look forward to seeing what Josh from the BR does while Be-B plays in Portland. The point of this dribble is that there are some great bands, people, and places in town for young people. Be prepared to have fun, because between now and January, the action around town for young people and fans of hard music is picking up. A reminder.... Make sure if you want to be covered in this little infrequent online rag (where’s my Blue Dog Black!) to send us your info. We usually find out what is up, but if you don’t tell us, sometimes we won’t know. Good help is hard to find... As we once again push a band that hasn’t even been a band for a while that we always liked (so there) the Tri-county’s Shotgun Kisses think that they have found a new electric throat,.,.,mabye. The MySpace sites of the month had to be Parkers when I saw the picture to the right, which proves that you always need to watch your back in the big city. The other one is this girl, who’s bulletins just crack me up. Also Lit and Cujo. Saturdays movie will be? The MySpace Band site of the month is from Sequim’s Justin Forshaw. Whatever it is with the land where John Wayne parked his boat and “Metal” in a very broad term, it seems that See-quiem is turning into a little haven for it. Pretty much spans the spectrum from Justin’s blazing old-school Vai-type thang to DWR, who just seems to be chugging right along, and winning over fans every time they play. We think its because they have a Taco Bell. Also check out The River City Rebels who put on a great set at the hall last month. Time for Hero’s and Zeros. Their is only one Hero for the month of August and that is Katie. Happy birthday, and thank you for being the best person I know, and my best friend. Zeros for this installment includes every damm member of the bush administration. Dammit, get Bill back! Do we really have 2 more years of this guy and his buds? I know I said I would keep the politics down, but it goes so well with music. Get ready to vote if you can in the October congressional elections. Till later...
June 19th, 2006. I never did like Summer. Everyone splits on vacation, big shows worth seeing are in bug-infested sheds in the middle of nowhere, and the sun just shouldn’t be up in the middle of a rockers night. That doesn’t mean that the ones who do like the sun and are sticking around don’t have some awesome summer fun planned. But first...the news. Some money raised...Some fun had.... The show this weekend was cool. Minor Imperfection got things started with a great set, at an early hour. They said they hadn’t played a show in 6 months, but you couldn’t tell. The 3 piece barreled through a set that was energetic, and songs that made you want to see them again. Another Lost Hero played next. It’s safe to say that these guys can, and probably will be a force in the local rock scene if they continue to get stage time, as their 2nd Legion performance was powerful enough to see where this band can be in a year. Songs like Downward Spiral have already been stuck in my head in its raw form for a bit now, and it will be interesting to see where the band takes their hooky punk as they progress. A band that promoted shows themselves at the Hall, Innuendo hit the stage. While admittedly rusty after not playing a show in about a year, the girls still pulled out older material that showed that fun and passion can still make up for any missed notes, and it was awesome to see them back playing in PT. Brett Pemberton and his band including Ty and Sam were up next. Most of you know the history of Brett’s musical endeavors in this area, and he showed once more that strong songs, catchy hooks and tortured soul vocals can always mesmerize. Sam, who pulled double duty with Hard Candy, sported more drum techs than Travis Barker, and was soooo “rock”. Seriously, a real bright spot watching a drummer that was super solid. Ty was solid as well in holding down the bass and Brett? Lets just say he gave us another one of those evenings that made us even more amazed at what he can do. After a solid set of songs featuring not only “that” guitar and vocal sound that a lot of us love, but a punked out version of a Waiting for the Sun classic “it all falls down”, he followed it up by helping Hard Candy out on Bass, learning 8 songs in an hour in the basement of the hall after HC’s bassist Bobby failed to show. Brett didn’t just fit in with Hard Candy, he actually took a semi-solo or two on the bass, and revved Christens thunderbird like Gene Simmions. Hard Candy with him, Sam, Isaiah, and Dan finished the show up with a cool set of Hadlock Rock that feature cool riffs and a really cool compliment between the 2 guitars. Hard Candy is always like going to a party in the woods. You never know what will happen, but it will almost always feature a comfortable mix of chaos, fun and slick solos. All in all, another great show, and some cash was made for a great cause in the American Cancer Societies, Relay for Life. Big thanks to all that made it happen, and sponsors the Blue Moose Cafe and Quimper Credit Union. Next on tap is a pair of cool shows at The Boiler Room. The first, this Tuesday, has the much-talked-about Stalin’s War with Oak Harbor’s Haden opening. Both bands are getting a ton of attention and shows in the Kitsap scene, and it should be a show not to be missed. The 2nd show coming up is a unique “girls skate-rock event on the 12th. Peggy Oki, a member of the famed Dogtown Z-boys Skate team will be hanging out at the skate park from 2 to 4. There will also be a best bert contest, and promoter Jim is also getting some others involved in what will bring a true legend of the sport to PT. THEN... at 4:30 at the Boiler Room, they will be showing the documentary, Dogtown and Z-Boys and Peggy will take some questions about the early days of skate afterwards. THEN.... at 7PM, Innuendo will take the stage to close out a great day of real girl-power. Other shows of note in the area this month include a tight billing of The River City Rebels, Captain Incognito, The Boss Martians, Agent Apathy, and Sidewalk Revenge at the Legion on Friday the 14th in a Matias-produced show and of course, our buddies Patterns and Aiden will be at the George on the Warped Tour the next day, July 15th. We shall miss thee...The Amazombies played their last show a couple of weeks back. Not local, but they played dozens of shows with the Points, kicked some serious ass, and will be missed. Don’t forget that there is a pirate. out there somewhere... on weekend nights, and can be found at 87.9. Recent on-air escapades include hang outs with DJ Madness and Father North from Madness of the North, and a great selection of local rock. Besides his regular gig at see-quiems Club Escape (which hosted a recent 21+ DWR show), you can now get DJ Style E’s tracks Here. Steve and Quimper Sound are in full on move-mode, and the new store across from the Rose will be open on July 1st. There will be a vinyl room in the old bank vault, a wider selection of DVDs, a small performance space for acoustic and DJ in-stores, and a coffee bar with tables and chairs. Steve will also keep the store open till MIDNIGHT on weekends. All in all, Quimper is really stepping up what it will offer to local musicians and music lovers. Recorded stuff... A pair of new Nihilists tracks are up and The Inkreats tracks should be up soon. All were recorded with Joe Renike from Alien Crime Syndicate engineering and sound rad. Jim is producing several DVD’s of bands that have played the Legion. All are pretty cool, and all the money if you buy one after the packaging goes right back to the bands. He is into working with other locals who would like live video, so e-mail him if you are a local band wanting a cheap/free way to get into DVD. If you haven’t heard.... The Briefs have been added to the Aug show with The Hollowpoints, The Nihilists, and The Inkreats. The MySpace fan site of the month comes to us in the “about to give birth” mind of Pink Death. She tells us she is really board and would appreciate some MySpace love, as she doesn’t leave the house much anymore. The MySpace Band site of the month is Stalin’s War. Time for Hero’s and Zeros. The Hero’s this time include all the folks and sponsors that worked on the last show this week, all the faces we hadn’t seen in a while, Becky, BeB (Who will be missed for the job she did as the music promotions person) and the Boiler Room for putting on some serious rock over the last month, and having more planned. Please support them, as we hear they could use some volunteers of late. Zeros for this installment are The Centrum’s “School of Rock”. Not to be a downer on a “non-profit”, but please. If you are going to put on a “school of rock” with a portion of your 1+ million dollar budget, and charge kids $60 (300+ if you are from out of state), PLEASE hire someone to be part of the Faculty that has toured with a rock band in this century. No offense, but there are plenty of real rock musicians that are currently working, that the kids would learn more from, and god knows that while they aren’t in your “grant loop”, they would be a closer link between student and teacher than bringing out the dinosaurs to talk about the old days. They get too much of that crap from me. Till later...
May 28th, 2006 - Summers here, and the time is right for road trips, new local shows, and plans for that yearly mass exodus called Warped Tour. First...the news. Kane Hodder lost 2 members, but that hasn’t stopped them. Rumor has it that the departing pieces were quickly replaced by some of the guys from Claymore, and are playing a most excellent show with Stalin's War, The Hollowpoints, and Tiki House favs the Helen Killers on June 30th at the DV Hall in Bremerton. They will also be at Bumpershoot and then taking a break to record a new CD. Rockin the Rec... Steve Grandinetti is throwing a show on the 3rd at the Rec Center with Captain Incognito, Gearth, his band Gypsy Joy Ride, and locals Nameless Angel, Renegade and Soul Syndicate. Advance tix are a cheap $3 at Quimper or $5 at the door. Sorry for mangling your name all these years dude.... We here that this might be the last show for a bit for Sam and Ezekial, who are making the trip to create in Portland. Celebrate the Devil... Dead Whore River is having what should prove to be a memorable show on 6-6-06 at The El Corazone with Left Alive, Church Of Hate, and Breakneck. Lot’s to do on one weekend.... The weekend of June 10th has a few really cool things going on with Thee Naked Andy Faxion Outdoor music festival happening in Poulsbo (RIP Mitzels), with some really amazing local bands. The 10th and 11th has an awesome summer kick off and benefit at the Boiler Room with a whole ton of bands, including the first Shotgun Kisses and Pharmacy sets we have seen in a while. On June 8th, the BR hosts a show with folk/punk band lynched from Dublin, sun skull from Olympia and snuggle from Seattle. Another reason to be stoked school is out... The 23rd has more action at the Legion with the return of Innuendo in almost a year, and a band featuring Brett Pemberton, Ty, and Sam that we are dying to see. Hall veterans Hard Candy and PA’s Minor Imperfection, along with Another Lost Hero (Who rocked the last show) round out a nice way to usher in the summer. All the proceeds will go to a great cause, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for life, and the show is being produced by a collaboration of adults and kids that are the same old faces you have always seen. A reason to look forward to school.... That same collective of people will be producing their first “over the top” Legion show with a “back to school” on August 26th with The HollowPoints, Fall From Grace, The Nihilist and The Inkreats. Wholly Molly that’s cool... Big congrats to Patterns for landing a slot on the Warped Tour, along with a ton of other locals. We will try to get a complete list posted on the board before the show. Recording News...The Nihilist and The Inkreats will be laying down some tracks at Orbit Audio in June, and Jim Anderson will be working on DVDs for both as well. According to Jim.... Speaking of Jim, if you don’t already know, he, along with others have been documenting shows for a while, and he has decided to put together DVD’s from bands both past and present, including the HollowPoints 2002 Legion show, Waiting for the Sun, and The Phenomenauts show last month at Hells Kitchen. The Phenomenauts are actually having big issues with their bus, are stuck as hell in Florida with little cash, and are crashing at friends. While we think it’s funny as hell that men from Oakland are walking around in space suits in Florida, Jim has decided to give 100% of ALL money from the sale of their DVD to the band to help them out. Contact Jim about any of these DVD’s, but he promises that he will have a site up soon with these, and more cool things. Speaking of DVD, CASH MONEY!... You are doing yourself a HUGE disservice if you don’t hunt the Warrior down for your copy of AK-47’s DVD of his show in San Diego. Just awesome, and trust me when I tell you that the Warrior and Len hit it hard, This DVD is a must have. Log On-Turn On... Kitsap Bands.com has kind of changed the guard from the disgruntled and burned out Mac (RIP. He did a TON for that site while not even living anywhere close to Kitsap. A big thanks you creep :), to the new guard, proud homemade bass owner and former Port Townsend concert supporter Asa . Lots of good reasons to look at that scene, with Valley of the Dinosaurs and others either on tour, or playing a ton of shows this summer. Punk and Politics go so well together...The coolest thing about the internet is that it lets anyone with talent and hutzpah to be as big as anyone in the world. Local bands can have as good a site as a major label band. Please take a moment to visit http://www.savetheinternet.com and take a look at the issue at hand, and if you will, Sign their petition. Those that can afford the new “Internet2” are all set, but that doesn’t include most reading this. Turn the Radio On.... Danno will be hosting him first show on that eye-patch thing that blasts in R-booted Hadlockofonik on Friday nights. Expect him to be playing TONS of local music. MySpace is kind of like the 4-track of the web.... The MySpace site of the month is from The Heavy Metal Warrior. Not only does the guy have the best non-MySpace site in town, but his space kicks ass too! Heroes of this update are all the people who took great pictures of the last legion show and posted them on the Board. Zeros include anyone who thinks we are all going to die on 6-6-06.
May 21st, 2006 - On the week of the first Legion Hall show in 6 months, here we are again with all those little things you don’t hear about, but know they are there. Kind of like the sugar on your rice krispies, so here we go. Rock should not happen outdoors at 10:30 AM... The Skatepark grand opening was a thing of beauty. One of those special days in PT that only happens when everyone gets involved, and the only serious money on the line is the city’s. Coolest Kum-bye-ya event in town since they had that “battle of the bands” think at the Centrum a few years back. A musical review of the show saw the most eclectic you could have in PT while still being an entertaining show. Captain Incognito started things off (did I mention it was early). replacing The Big Whoop, with a set of well crafted songs and a mature performance that rocked beyond their short existence. The thing that was impressive about their set is that I got several people, of all age groups asking me who they were, hours after their set. A sure sign that something credible is going on. Funk band Lucius Clay followed with a set that hadn’t changed much since the last time I saw them, but they were a perfect funky “sunny-day-afternoon” thing. Girth followed, and I know I have said something similar to this before, but Zeke Wakefeild is fun as hell to watch, and Sam is a great bass player as well. No doubt in my mind that if Zeke played more aggressive rock he would be everyone’s favorite local player. Girth serves up a mix of blues/classic based rock that shows off his Derek Trucks (Allman Bros.) based licks and soulful bends, but we would love to see what would happen if he played in a more “aggressive” band. The Inkreats got the first official “pit” of the skatepark going with a show that keeps getting better. If these guys don’t blow you away on Saturday, then I am misreading what appears to be a band that is going down smoother and with more energy with each show. They might have 2nd guitarist Ryan in tow at the show this Saturday, and they will be filming the show for a DVD. Patterns debuted a new line up with a nice powerful set. My wife mentioned to me that they sound like an aggressive Letters to Cleo, which is a good thing, and the new pieces sounded great. Unfortunate that comparisons to Schoolyard are unavoidable, but these guys have there own sound, and will be a band to watch in more interesting reasons than the aforementioned heroes. Style E provided some beats before the closing set from the Nihilist. The songs rocked, the performance was cool, and the Warrior got knocked on his but by a 4 foot purple-haired girl. Musically, this band is a freight train, with triple vocals that make the dual vocal attack of the God Awfuls seem tame. Great to see them back in action after taking a break over most of the winter. Big thanks to the Boiler Room, Cory and Katska, The City, Jim, Walter and the sound dudes, and everyone who made it a cool thing. Mucho pictures on the Shedboard , and a COOL video by Jim. Ya can’t do that thing if you ain’t got that swing... The Love Doll Swingers have been around for a while playing unabashed punk/garage rock that is gaining fans and mixing the best of old boggie rock vocals ala the Spin Doctors with songs that present an abandon akin to Jack White’s new project. Cool stuff, and you can catch Usana, Walter and George live this Saturday at the Boiler Room. If you promote a show for your final class project, and you fail to promote, you get a D.... We guess a show was put on by Sam (Pete from Libido’s bro), but we don’t know who played, or or even that it was happening until the night of. Guess we aren’t as plugged in as we think, but neither were many others as we hear there was only about 40 who showed. You can hear a mouse pee into a cotton ball in the Legion with less than 100. We like kids, especially when they are someone else’s... Congrats to Kimya Dawson who is expecting something out of her belly soon. may it be healthy and full of joy. Feel the love.... The Boiler Room is throwing some cool June shows. On the 8th, it’s a show with folk/punk band lynched from Dublin, sun skull from Olympia and snuggle from Seattle. On the 10th, it’s a big show and benefit with the Bismarck, shark shark, shotgun kisses, Tyler Reid, the histrionics, plentyface, Captain incognito, owl dudes from Portland, stabbin hobo from Bellingham, the pharmacy, bEe, caveman cyborg, and more. There will be a silent auction and other cool things, and it looks like an all day fun time. Support and involvement is a cool thing. Wonder how long it will be before we see the headline “Teen show at the Legion”.... The Leader has a new arts editor, and she reportedly interviewed Promoter Kid head Matias. Check you bird cage, I mean newspaper this Wednesday for the full poop, but the fact that half the town has called it the mis-leader for years brings up the opportunity for a fun game. Play along with me. Here is the release that we sent them. Let see how many things they change to get it wrong. I just wish they would hire someone who actually understands rock bands to cover what is just as viable, if not more interesting side of the PT “arts scene” than the normal community fluff. More shows coming right up.... Plans are in the works for more events at the Legion (DWR say they need PT...PT needs more DWR), Boiler Room, Skatepark, and other venues this summer, and the good news is all you have to do is show up. You little urchins that say you never have any money can save 2 bones and buy a ticket to this Saturdays Schoolyard show at Quimper Sound. The MySpace site of the week comes to us from Brett Pemberton. Were bummed we missed his Sirens show, and with a full slate of festival performances this summer, a new solo show that mixes a ton of elements, and some updated items in his spaces, our favorite tourtured-soul songwriter is continuing to write material that speaks to the human nature in a way that no other local artist does. The Heroes of the week are H2O graphics. We love it when a local company actively seeks out the business of local bands, and these guys are willing to please, The other Hero is the Federal Air Marshall who lost his job for blowing the whistle on how ineffective post 911 security measures really are. We need more government workers like that. Zeros of the week are just heroes in the making. See you Saturday.
€April 28th, 2006 - Time for another installment of the only place that puts all the local rock in a box and serves it up with a pound of sass. Will load gear for frequent flier miles... We thought we would bring you up to date on the travels of our local (and former local) noisemakers. Dakotah has left to join up with Aiden in Florida for a tour with HIM, and then you can hit him up for tickets/throw spitballs at him during the Warped Tour. The Hollowpoints embark on their US tour with the US Bombs soon, and the band has also been nominated for a Seattle Weekly Music Award for best punk band. . If the points are h |
